This Class List specifies all Race Classes in which there may be a Race on an AMRA Race Day.  At the discretion of the AMRA Race Official on Race Day, any class which does not have four Registered Riders may be deleted from the list.  This specifications list is merely a guide, the complete rules can be found in  AMRA’s Rule Book here.

Understanding Our Classes

In order to maintain a competitive race, we split up our classes in multiple ways, by bike/displacement, by combined weight and by skill level. The following explains some of the key differences and bike class descriptions are provided further below.

Spec vs. Formula Classes

Spec classes allow for only minimal modifications. Basically the bike has to be as-it-was when it left the factory. You can change the tires, gearing, and make adjustments for safety (e.g. sliders, safety wiring), but performance improvements are generally prohibited. With formula classes, modifications are pretty much limited only by your wallet.

Supersport vs. Thunder Classes

Supersport classes are for sport-style motorcycles. Thunder classes are for dirt-bike-style motorcycles.

Weight-based

Two of our bike classes, Motard and Formula GP, are weight-based classes. The specific details for each can be found in our AMRA rules (Motard s.14.8 and Formula GP s.14.12).

Youth, Provisional and Open Licences

In addition to the different bike classes, our riders are classified as Youth, Provisional or Open. Youth licences are for riders 6-9 years of age (as of Jan 1). Provisional licenses are for new or less experienced racers. Open licences are for experienced racers. Generally, riders 10 and up will start with a Provisional licence and will move to Open when an AMRA official evidences the adequate skill level. There is also a class for Women which is open to non-Youth women of all skill levels.
